Windows 10 is still free
You can still upgrade Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10 for free while maintaining your existing programs and data.

Method 1

Installs latest version
You can only upgrade a 7-8 Home version for free to windows 10 Home and Professional to Pro.
Download the Mediacreation tool.

With the official free upgrade from June 2015 to June 2016 (and the unofficial extension until Dec. 31, 2017), reactivation of Windows and Office was not necessary.
You can, if necessary, after the installation of Windows 10 use those existing activation codes to (re)activate Windows 10 and Office.
This would not be necessary with the creation tool either, but just to be sure, you can look up those codes anyway.
If you can't find them anywhere else, download and install the free version of
Magic Jelly Bean Keyfinder to view them.
And then you can copy those codes in notepad, and save them on a USB stick and/or print them out.

A copy (Windows.old) of the existing installation is stored and you need 20-25 gb of free space on the C for that.
If not, you probably won't be able to upgrade.
Follow the instructions and the upgrade can take up to 2 hours.

Classic Shell
Unfortunately, it has not been supported since May 2019.
After you have completed the upgrade, find an alternative to the classic/open shell.
The familiar start button of Windows 7. Then you don't have anything to do with those colored tiles anymore.

(Re)activate if necessary
Go to start/settings/update and security/activation.
If Windows is activated then you don't have to do anything, and if not, enter the product code.
That is the Windows 7 or 8 activation code you already had or detected.
Try to open Word and see if you can type.
If you can, Office is still activated.

If not, then your Office will probably also have to reactivate.
Go to control panel/programs and features/
Right-click on Office and choose change and then product code.
Enter the Office code.

Once that is completed, open Word.
Then there will be an activation menu and then you click on it and you will be thanked for the activation.
If you type and you don't succeed, close Word and restart it and see if you can type.
If you can type, Office is activated.

Not all icons on the desktop.
If you had activated the administrator in Windows 7 or 8, it is possible that after the upgrade to 10, you will see the administrator's desktop.
When you click the start button you will see the account name in the upper left corner of that menu.
If it is indeed the administrator, go to the account you normally work with.
Then you should see the familiar desktop again.

If everything works and you are happy with it, you can't just remove the Windows old file of 20-25 gb.

Type in that search window:
Cleanmgr

Then you'll see cleanmgr above it and you'll see it with your right mouse button.
Run as administrator.
C
Click on OK, that will take a while.
Then you get a menu including previous windows installations, and you have to check  them all.
Then you can also see what you can make totally free.
OK Delete.
You will get another warning that you delete the previous installation and OK

You can then delete the old restore points, and create a new restore point.
After that you can make an image of that C.
